Aaron Barrett

Specialist Technician

Aaron is the Specialist Technician in charge of the Autonomous Vessel at the University of Plymouth, run on behalf of the Marine Business Technology Centre (MBTC). He has been at the University for three years, originally working as an Instrumentation Engineer, designing, building and deploying instrumentation for Marine Science, and coordinating and skippering vessels for research. His specialisms include the electromechanical engineering of remote sensing and sampling equipment and the design and deployment of autonomous marine systems.

In his MBTC role, Aaron is providing a complete package of hardware and technical support to Devon based SMEs needing to trial products and services using autonomous or remotely operated marine platforms.

Prior to working at the University, Aaron worked offshore as an engineer in the oil and gas sector, and prior to that in science and technology education. In addition to his civilian career, he is a serving Royal Navy Reserve Diving officer with a responsibly for delivering Maritime Underwater Force Protection capability to the Royal Navy and is part of the Nato Submarine Rescue System (NSRS) manning pool.

Aaron is currently living in South Cornwall and is a passionate yachtsman and diver.
